Yuvuk

Coming from Batanes, the yuvuk is a sturdy oval basket used by women to carry their harvests.

It is made out of “didit” or “nito”, or the Japanese climbing fern (Lygodium japonicum), where strips of it are woven over a framework, “pamakaw”, of vine and bamboo, and is given a strap called “apid” made of braided bark strips.

The process of making the basket starts with preparing the framework by selecting a long and straight didit that is then coiled around a bamboo or banana stalk, then left for a few days to settle into a permanent shape.

Later, the strips are cleaned and smoothed, while bark from the hanut tree is collected for the apid. The depth of the basket depends on the maker but normally it’s the same as the mouth’s. The length of the strap depends on ont the user’s needs.
